K/M Resorts

The offices of K/M Resorts is about a mile from Camping World in Fife, Washington.  http://www.kmresorts.com/

So a little back story before I continue. My mom and dad had a long time membership with NACO/Thousand Trails. I'm not sure how that happened as my parents were not campers. My dad liked to fish, but otherwise you were more likely to find him inside reading than outside doing anything else. I'm guessing my mom played the fishing card to get him to agree to the membership. Sadly, he never had a chance to use the membership before he passed away. My mom did use the resorts once a year to prepare her income taxes (no phones, no TV - this was before cell phones and satellite TV) and occasionally to take the grandkids camping for a weekend. She only used the rental trailers that were on-site at the reserves. When my mom's health deteriorated, she gave her membership over to me.  By this time, our kids were over 18, and both Kim and I were busy working most of the time.  I did a lot of traveling.  We just never got around to using the membership.  I knew we would, at some point, be buying a rig and traveling around the US and Canada, so I hung on to it, paying the approximately $500 dues each year.  It's been 5 years now.

Once we knew we were definitely buying a rig, I called NACO/Thousand Trails about what resorts/reserves were available to us, and other details about full time RVing.  Imagine my surprise to find out, that if you read the fine print, if you buy or are gifted a membership from another party, after 3 years, the membership reverts back to a bare minimum basic account.  I had access to only the original NACO resorts.  No access to Thousand Trails.  No access to Leisure Time Resorts.  And when I asked to talk to someone at NACO about options, there was no one available to answer my questions.  I was told there were meetings about upgrading memberships that were held from time to time.  I was peeved that I should have to upgrade a membership that was already at the highest level when it was purchased.  It losts its level because it was given to me.  I'll admit it was in the fine print, but it was never mentioned when my mom called to inquire about transfer of membership.  Why was that?

We sat down at the offices of K/M Resorts with Kevin Bibeau.  Long story short, after describing all the benefits and resort affiliates available through K/M Resorts, and answering my many questions, we got down to talking about money and costs.  We did receive the $2000 credit for purchasing our 5th wheel from Poulsbo RV, and we were offered a very fair trade in value for the limited NACO membership.  Kim and I asked for a few moments to confer, and after some very quick cost comparisons we figured the membership would pay for itself within 6 months.  Yes, there will be annual dues, but I was already paying more than K/M Resort dues to NACO for far less benefits.

So we took a deep breath, and wrote out a check.  Now normally, I don't spend that kind of money without taking a day to think about it.  And I will say that Kevin did not use the high pressure "This is a one time only offer.  Sign today or the deal's off" tactic.  If he had, I would have walked out the door.  This sales experience was very low key.  The facts were laid out.  All my questions and concerns were answered.  (Thanks to NACO, I knew some appropriate questions to ask).  Did we make the right decision?  I think so.  I'm very happy with the investment.

If you are looking at an RV Resort Membership, we'd like to refer you to Kevin Bibeau at K/M Resorts.  Phone number is 800.392.5722.  The K/M Resort website is http://www.kmresorts.com/  Tell Kevin that Kim and Betsy Brown referred you.  We do get some credit for referrals.  For every referral that attends a presentation, we receive a $25 gift certificate to Olive Garden.  If memberships are purchased from those presentations, we receive a $100 cash for the first referral, $200 cash for the second referral, and our Dues Waived For Life for the third referral.  I'm aiming for the Dues Waived For Life level.  It will take the sour taste about NACO, and all the dues I paid to them, away I'm sure!

So give Kevin a call and listen to what he has to say.  We were extremely pleased with his service!

  1. Well things have changed. There is not security at all the parks and the ones that supposed to, do nothing. You can now go into some of the parks and use all facilities for 5.00 a day, know membership need from an other system. That's right Joe Blow off the street.
You don't need to read the rules because the rules are never in forced. Should an employee try to in force them management either backs done or fires the employee that is trying to do there job.

You can phone for a reservation and when ou arrive there are know spaces available. And just guess what the main topic of conversation is around the campfire????? That right just how bad things are getting. Oh yeah did I mention the crushed beer cans left around on the road and the drunks straggling around, yeah I really want the kids to see that.

Yep really want to pay them 8 grand plus yearly dues that go up by cost of living every year.

    2. Kelli - it's nice to see that K/M is taking a proactive and assumably customer friendly response to this. Because the original post is almost 2 years old, I doubt they will be contacting you. But I do appauld good customer service.

  2. Our original comment was written in September 2009. It's been over a year since we have been at a K/M Resort to stay. We were blessed with grandbabies, and our camping-full time travel in the RV plans changed. I'm sorry to hear that these resorts have gone down hill.

One thing I have learned is that I'm not always impressed with the membership type campgrounds. They are not always as clean or well maintained as privately owned one. We have paid one more year of K/M membership dues, but if we find we are not camping much at all, we may look at selling (or just releasing the membership). Time will tell.

  3. We made the mistake of buying a membership, only to discover later that the campgrounds aren't anything at all like the lies that the sales woman laid on us when we purchased. We asked for a refund...

"Too late" Was the response, followed by "This matter is closed".

Nice customer service, eh? Guess they don't care about dissatisfied customers after they get your hard-earned money!

    1. The pictures and videos we show in our presentation are all pictures of our K/M Resorts in Washington. We do not use stock photos or videos. As far as cancelling, the information is in the contract that you would have signed, we disclose all of the information. All our administration staff has been here 10+ years, they are knowledgeable and helpful, if you have any problem you can contact me at the Fife office.

  4. I must admit I'm not as impressed with K/M as I would like to be. A few of their resorts are okay, but there are some that I would definitely not utilize. We've been busy with our grandkids and the decision on what to do with the K/M membership has been put on the back burner. We've talked about the TT zone memberships. I'm not sure I'd use those either. Some of their parks are great and some not so much.

I hope there is a reasonable resolution to both of our situations.

  5. We ended up cancelling our membership with K/M. We just weren't using it at all. I have learned that I prefer the high end campgrounds, most of which do not have "memberships" and I'm willing to pay their fees. Our grandbabies are still babies and we won't be camping or travelling much for a few years. We will wait to see what happens to the various campgrounds over time.

  6. Interesting that you went from gushing to cancelling in four years. We just re-up'd, but only because we haven't figured out how to cancel and don't want dues owing to hammer our credit score. My bone of contention is that we had high pressure at the initial meeting to chose a home park, do it now, make sure it's close by your home, do it now, did I mention do it now?

So, we chose a home park close to home. We live in the country, aside from RVs packed within 15 feet of each other what we get at our home park is what we get outside our front door. I have contacted KM several times over the years telling them we would be very happy campers (pun intended) if they would simply let us chose a new home park. They either never respond or tell me someone will call, but no one calls. That would cost them absolutely nothing and as a result I'd stop dropping in on every blog I can access and telling this tale.

Depending on the membership you have I dont see a issue with switching your home park. Please call the fife office and ask for me I would be happy to help you Thanks again Jackie

    3. Thank you for your comments. You are responding to comments that are about 2 years old. I, personally, had no problem canceling my membership. I am not sure if the person who made the comments is following my blog anymore.

  7. How odd....why in the world would they not let you change to a different home park. That's just weird.

The gushing came from a newbie RVer. As we got some travelling and camping under out belts, I found I have more of a 4 to 5 star campground taste. K/M Resorts, IMHO, are closer to 2 stars. I thought the park up in Blaine/Birch Bay, and the one in Elma were okay, but the other parks we visited...well, I wouldn't stay there.

My husband did a web search, and found a form letter to use to cancel campground memberships. We sent it certified mail, return receipt, and have had no further communication (bills/notices) from them.

We have friends and relatives that have Thousand Trail regional memberships - $500 a year, no contracts. We've looked into these, and I've visited many of their resorts...some good, some not so good. Those closest to use (Snohomish County) aren't bad, and we may go that route as our grandkids get older and may want to go camping with us over the weekend. We'll see. Once we set out on the road again, I think we will just stick with higher end campgrounds, and pay the higher fee. We do belong to Passport America, and I started following them on Pinterest to get an idea on some of their campgrounds.

Good luck to you with K/M....perhaps visiting their Fife Office in person and being quite vocal about your experiences may bring results. Also, if you do Facebook, posting your complaints on their page may get some results as well.

  10. Hello again, Betsy,

So, have you tried Passport America? How do you like it? Are you familiar at all with their discount campgrounds (run about $20 to $40 per night)?

Are Thousand Trails a mid-range whereas Passport America would be high end?

    Thanks.

    Al

  11. We are Passport America members, and have used their discounts. I generally like their parks. We haven't signed on with Thousand Trails yet, mostly because we have not been traveling. We are enjoying time at home with our grandsons, four of whom are under the age of 4. Maybe next summer, the babies will be old enough that we will consider taking everyone with us. We'll see.

  12. What are the high end campground around WA that you have found and what are the prices like?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Good question. I haven't stayed in any what I would call high end resorts here in WA. I always check rvparkreviews.com for ideas. We found a really, really nice one in Las Vegas, but they only took motor homes, no 5th wheels, so we couldn't stay there. I think it was called the LVM Resort. Take a look at their website to see what I mean by a high end campground. There are some nice campgrounds here in WA, probably nicer ones in Wine Country (eastern WA) but you know it all depends on what you are looking for. I'm not a "clubhouse" person. I want a nice view, nice amenities should I choose to use them, but mostly we camp for the peace and quiet, to read and enjoy the outdoors/views, and not to socialize.

  14. Betsy,
Can you point me in the direction you found the form letter? I am SO done with KM Resorts. I have had AWFUL experiences with them the last 2 times we have stayed. One of the time the campground employee actually chased my kids back to the campsite & told them there were no longer allowed to play basketball cause it was quiet time.....it was 6:30pm!!! DONE DONE DONE I will never set foot in another KM resort! Not such a family friendly place like they claim!

  15. Jenn, this is the website where my husband found the information:

    http://www.natlassoc.org/fight/smpl2.htm

Good luck! We had no problem once we sent the letter certified return receipt requested. Of course, we were out our initial payment but we were no longer responsible for dues to campgrounds we did not use.

  16. Thank you for showing me that aweome campground in Nevada! Probably will never make it there, but it looks like my kind of place! We recently went to a KM presentation and the guy kept claiming that their dues never go up...except one year when their was a tax increase. We weren't sure if we should believe him so we didn't sign up. Then they proceeded to tell us we have trust issues...even more reason to walk out the door.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Well, I wouldn't sign up with them again. I am considering a year to year thing with Thousand Trails for next year. It's limited to one "zone" (groups of states) but often if you sign up at their booth at the home show or the RV show, you can get two zones for the price of one. Not 5 star resorts, but the ones I've visited with other family members seemed nice.

    1. I'm not sure if you read all the entries in this blog post. After experiencing KM Resorts, I was not as thrilled or impressed as the first entry would imply. We did cancel our membership and go back with Thousand Trails. So far we are happy with our Zone membership. We will be checking the majority of campgrounds in our area before deciding about renewing.

I'm sorry your parents are having such a hard time with this. We had no problem canceling, but of course, we got nothing back, and were just out our money. I wonder if there are any class action lawsuits out there. Might be worth the time to google it. Good luck!

  19. Nanda with KM is extremely unprofessional and rude. Asked to speak with a manager and she said she is the manager. Very unfortunate for them to have such poor representation. When I asked to speak with her manager, she told me to call her. Clearly, she does not want me to speak with management. I will not be signing up and recommend a buyer beware as they seem very shady. This gets negative stars. She then emailed me Kelli's phone number but at this point, their company is very far from being stellar in my eyes. They lack customer service.

  20. Have enjoyed reading (most) of these entries. I just returned from my 3-day complimentary campout at a K & M campground near me. I found the grounds clean and well maintained, although lacking in visual appeal. I would liken it to a football field with hookups.

The salesman was the consummate used car guy, complete with gold chain necklace and an enormous pot belly. He was a fast talker that, to put it in layman's terms, didn't know shit from Shinola, quoting me any number of lies that I could immediately identify.

I've been RVing for 40 years and this ain't my first rodeo, but as a single woman found the entire pitch condescending and lacking in basic social respect. There's your clue. Having already queried several of the very friendly campers, I thought I knew what to expect. I was quoted $7,000 sign up for just the basic K&M campgrounds PLUS and extra $3,000 if I wanted to upgrade to ROD from RPI. Seriously? I had just been told $500 for the upgrade from several of the current campers.

Needless to say, I did not buy and will not buy. I took the opportunity to let the sales rep know that it was not the program that was killing it for me but his (lack of) salesmanship. By then, I really didn't care if he liked the statement or not.

What I concluded from this experience is that K&M discourages single RVers from joining based on my witness account of not one other identifiable single camper there amongst 90+ rigs. When I figured that one out, it felt like a punch in the gut.

Accommodations were limited to what you could find at your local city park along with the cable TV, which was a nice consolation because these parks are not located adjacent to bike trails, rivers, lakes, dunes, or any other recreational areas that I am aware of. To play, one must get in your pickup and drive elsewhere. Hm. There are too many other camping places that have much to offer for one hell of a lot less money than what K&M has. I do not recommend K&M for any level of experienced recreational camper.

    1. That is funny as I have been to many of the KM campgrounds and have not encountered the issues that you refer to. I would not base my opinion on one park if I were serious as you appear to be I would certainly check out their other campgrounds. If you look them up they have been in business since 1987 and I am sure they wouldnt turn you away or treat you any differently because you are single.

  21. Thanks for sharing your experience Cindy. As you read, we have washed our hands of K/M Resorts, and are currently Thousand Trails Zone Membership people. I don't know if you have checked them out. We are happy with it. 30 days of free camping, then only $3 per night. I have seen singles at the TT Campgrounds. I think it is all a matter of what one is looking for in a campground, membership or not. You should like you have plenty of camping experience and probably know what you are looking for. We were basically camping/RVing virgins. We are still trying to figure out what it is we are looking for. Thanks for stopping by.

  22. We checked out Thousand Trails Zone membership and what we found out was they let the public stay in the parks and it is way cheaper to just go in as public than to pay the zone price to them we really enjoy our KM parks but we have been to alot of their parks

My wife and I are selling our home and going on a bucket list tour for the next year starting in September and I almost fell for the line they were feeding but I decided to do my homework and have come to find an overwhelming number dissatisfied current and former clients.

  25. Hi Scott,

Thanks for your comments. The following are some of the things I have learned in the process for our nation wide tour.

Companies like ROD and RPI, which are listed as benefits on many campground memberships, require that you actually have a membership. When you show up at their campgrounds, you will get the discount on daily rates, but you will have only a few spots to choose from, and they will not be the "good spots". After the first year, you will have to pay membership dues to them, as well as your campground membership. So you can figure an additional $400 per year over your own campground dues.

We are enjoying our Thousand Trails zone membership. If you go to a RV show (or perhaps the deal is still available on line), you can get the buy one zone, get one zone free. We just renewed our membership after one year. Most of our traveling right now is in the WA, OR, CA, AZ, NV area. We will expand eventually, and look at purchasing a used membership. We do no want the "extras" that the salespeople promote.

If you are not wanting to get hooked into an expensive membership, you will want to look at Passport America memberships. Very reasonable. Good Sam is also reasonable, and usually provides at least a 10% discount off private parks on their list. I know lots of people also use Escapees.

My other piece of advice is to figure out what kind of camper you are. I like the idea of all the benefits of a bigger park, the pool, the spa, the clubhouse activities, etc., but I found I never use them. It's helped me rethink what I actually want in an RV park and/or membership.

Google RV blogs or something along those lines. Most blogs have a side bar with blogs they follow. Check out a few and you will find the ones that "speak" to you and your lifestyle.

We are a year or two away from selling the house and embarking on a long journey. Just waiting for the grandsons to be in school. I'm always envious of those that are already on the road. Good luck!

  26. After reading the entire string, I find it interesting that most of the negative comments are "by anonymous" no guts to use their real name or someone who has a personal agenda (Cindy).

We are new full time RV'ers and readily admit that KM is not a high end resort, but we knew what we were getting going in and have the membership to meet specific needs.

I find it interesting that Besty Brown is willing to pay the higher prices of the "high end" resorts because of their quality, but wants the same quality for paying very little. You can't expect a camp membership that allows you to stay and use the facilities from $0.00 to $10.00 a night to have the same funds to provide the quality of the "High End" camp grounds. We use KM when it meets our needs and other sites when that is important. When you evaluate the cost with the benefits, it all comes out in the wash. If you have a limitless budget then pay your way and stay at the upper end resort, but Km offer a service for those who would like to control their costs month to month.

One last thing, for those of you who would complain if you were hung with a new rope, get a life. If you don't have the courage to put your real name on your exaggerations and lies, you have zero credibility and are the cause of the declining society we live in. Get positive and get a life.

    1. Robert - thank you for posting on my personal blog. I'm glad you are enjoying your membership with KM. As you may have noticed, my original post was from 2009. We were new to RVing at that point. Experience showed me that KM Resorts did not provide what I was looking for in the way of campgrounds. It is nothing against them, and I did not criticize or berate them. It just was not what I was looking for. We did make the change to Thousand Trails Zone passes. We bought one zone and got one zone for free. This opened up our camping options quite a bit, and did not require an initial membership fee. Our yearly membership is about the same amount that KM Resorts charges for the yearly maintenance. I'm happy with my decision.

As for people who post anonymously, I cannot control that. I respect everyone's right to privacy and don't judge. Because it is my personal blog, I retain the right to publish posts. I generally do not chose to publish posts that just "bitch" about various campgrounds. If what the person says may be helpful to another, that is my main criteria. I have no agenda other than to share my personal opinions and insights, and to help others along the way.

As for everyone wanting something for nothing - well, duh! Of course we do. Is it unrealistic? Definitely. But don't you look for a good deal when you can get it? With a few years of experience under my belt, I find Thousand Trails a better match for me. And for what it's worth, I've also learned that the high end campgrounds aren't for me either. Next up for us to try will be boon docking. And I will be keeping that in mind as we shop for a new rig.

  27. So I realize this blog has been going for quite some time now. I just recently came across this while looking at reviews. I've worked for KM Resorts in the past and have used and continue to use their parks over the years with my family (So many wonderful memories). It does amaze me with the handful of negative comments out there. I know KM has thousands of members that enjoy the parks everyday. It's sad to me to read about how sales people are liars and dishonest people. That KM doesn't take care of their members. Or their parks are sub-par. None if this could be farther from the truth. I can tell you that for me working for KM. Selling memberships was rewarding. Straight talk. I live my life with the up most integrity. Most of my days were spent taking care of members reservations, special requests, listening to their adventures. Sharing my knowledge of RVing. Actually living vicariously through them. Knowing one day I would get my opportunity to travel and see this beautiful country behind the wheel of my hotel. I can tell you that a membership isn't for everyone. Bottom line, if you use it. It is a great value, and if you don't. No value at all. However, what a membership can provide is the ability to truly go when you want to go (not plan months a head)to beautiful camp grounds locally and cross country. To me a campground is a campground. I have found my favorites. And ones I will never use again. Ask yourself what are your alternatives? Buy a couple lots for 50k or so? Fight the crowds and pay on average $40 to $60 a night? Stay at Wal-Mart(How exciting)Boone doc camping? Really not an option anymore in the Northwest. Logging roads locked up. No overnight camping. People abused by dumping. Yes,the initial buy in can be expensive for a good membership. But the benefits pay for themselves over and over again. Rent vs Own. You are going to pay to camp one way or another. A membership can make it hassle free and affordable. If you camp more than 20 nights a year. I think a membership makes sense. KM Is able to guarantee your access to go when you want to go. To the beach,in the mountains,on the lakes,on the rivers ect. The truth is public campgrounds are getting more an more crowded especially in the peak season. They are not building new campgrounds but they are selling RVs in record numbers. I see reservations needed 6 months to a year in advance in the peak season. For me, I enjoy the fact that everyone is a member. Not open to the public. I don't worry about who may be camping next to me. Fully staffed parks and maintained. Amenities if my kids want to use them are important to me. I figure that I camp around 50 nights a year. If I calculate the years I've been a member using the formula of $40 a night. And the amount of camping I do now and intend on doing when I retire. It's a no brainer for me. I'm talking in the tens of thousands of dollars saved by just using my membership only half the time. As far as all of this how to cancel a KM membership. All you need to do is call the office and tell KM you no longer want it. No one has ever been locked in to dues over the 30 years KM has been in business. They will not hassle you to pay. it clearly states this in all membership contracts. Mater of fact KM would appreciate the ability to sale another membership in place of yours. Private memberships in Washington are held to a 10.1 ratio. This is one way they are able to guarantee your access. Thousand trails are not a Washington based company and they have opened their parks to the public for $50 a night. Overcrowding has become an issue. It is unfortunate to all of the original members that payed thousands of dollars for now open parks and zone memberships (very little variety). So in closing. My advise would be to go check out a KM park for yourself. Get the correct information about KM. So you can make an intelligent desion for your RVing needs. Happy camping to everyone RVing

    2. We purchased our membership around 10 years or so ago. John Kelly, I believe you sold us that membership back when they used to sell Cabin Memberships and the park models were a new thing. We didn't get the "you have to buy it today of the deal is off" experience. We even told John that we weren't going to buy that day and that we would come to their office that week to talk more - which we did. We didn't have an RV but took the plunge because it was exactly what we were looking for because of the cabins. We didn't have to choose Elma as our home park - we actually chose Randle because we were up skiing White Pass practically every weekend and that afforded us a free place to stay when skiing. We have been to all locations except Columbia shores since we heard that was mostly about fishing and didn't have a cabin. Our favorites are Maple Grove and Ocean Mist. There are some thing that we feel need upgrading - it seems like when a hot tub breaks, it is shut down and seems as tho it's never repaired or replaced (Ocean Mist and Diamond Point), and honestly the Park Model at Diamond point is seriously in need of being replaced completely. However, we notice they are always upgrading other major items. They have new park models, a yurt and outdoor covered area at Ocean Mist. Ocean Breeze actually was purchased by KM only a few years back - it used to be a Western Horizon resort and the time we took a tour thru there as a Western Horizon Resort it looked really run down. All of the parks we have been at have been really clean and well kept and the park hosts are always friendly. There are a lot of activities scheduled at these locations, poker, potlucks, cinnamon rolls, ice cream etc... We eventually upgraded our membership a few years after buying in because they offered half off yearly dues that would be frozen forever at about $175/yr and also the ability to give each of our kids a membership when they turned 18. We did get a call again last year so we assumed they wanted to upgrade our membership again, but the sales person who was supposed to come out never did and we didn't pursue it - I've come to understand that is a third party company that maybe KM hires to do these sales. We are happy with KM and April in the Fife office is always pleasant to work with. Eventually we will be purchasing an RV so we are confident this is something we will use for years to come.

  28. Thank you John for reading and commenting on this blog. The original post was from 2009. We did purchase a KM membership at that time. However, I was not impressed with the parks. I let the membership go. I am currently using Thousand Trails Zone Pass, and I have been much more happy with those campgrounds/preserves. Every camper has different needs and desires. KM did not fulfill mine, but I'm sure they are great for others. You never know until you try. To each his own. Happy Camping.

  29. I am no longer publishing any comments related to K/M Resorts. This post was originally written in 2009. It is now 2017. It's time to move on.
